The Coordinating Committee is the elected body of national officers that guide SCCS. The Coordinating Committee was created to support and unite chapters through student-based leadership and grass roots organizing. The CC can provide materials for individual chapters to hand out at meetings, advocacy strategies, media materials, research, and fundraising suggestions. Rob George, Co-Coordinator
This marks Rob's third year with SCCS and second year as a
student leader on the Coordinating Committee. Rob is deeply dedicated
to Global Justice, SCCS's parent organization, currently serving his
second year the GJ Board of Directors and previously chairing the
Outreach Committee for the first ever Global Justice National
Conference that had over 500 student activists in attendence. Rob
admires SCCS and the other GJ campaigns for empowering students and
feels the most important thing the GJ campaigns stress is global
solidarity and the interconnectedness of all humans no matter what
race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion they associate with.
Rob has witnessed this interconnectedness first hand through direct
service expierences that range from local organizations in his
hometown of Boston to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South
Dakota and the Rostro de Cristo Foundation in Duran, Ecuador. In
addition to SCCS Rob is an avid photographer who has studied
extensively at the New England School of Photography in Boston, he is
also an innovative filmmaker and a proud member of the American
Screenwriters Association.
University: Florida Institute of Technology Hi! I'm really excited to be on the CC and am looking forward to seeing some real changes in child survival in the next year. I am from the wonderful northwoods of Wisconsin, but I attend Florida Institute of Technology where I am involved in the student organizations Global Justice and Green Campus. I also run cross-country for Florida Tech and spend a lot of my time in the great outdoors. I believe that by combining environmental justice and child survival we can come to some solid conclusions on how to better serve our world. Chris Rehkamp, Grassroots Regional Coordinator, Midwest/West
With all the opportunities I have had in my life I realized
after getting involved in SCCS that my greatest opportunity was and is
to join the movement toward more universal human rights. Of all of the
citizens of our world the children are the least represented and
suffer the greatest consequences. After meeting the passionate people
involved in SCCS, witnessing their power as an organization and the
power they can offer an individual I knew this was my next path. SCCS
is at the forefront of the movement to change the situation of
children and will pave the next path in the advancement of children
worldwide.
My name is Chris Rubesch and I am a Junior Political Science and International Studies major at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN. I became involved in SCCS after working with my college's chapter on our anti-malaria campaign. After playing an active role in the campaign I became a leader in my club. From there I attended the SCCS national conference and returned fired up about making a difference. In addition to my position on the SCCS Coordinating Committee I am a Coordinator of my college's Center For Just Living, a resource center for social justice oriented clubs on campus. Outside of SCCS, I run Cross Country and track and Cross Country ski for St. Scholastica. I also enjoy endurance sports, and look forward to running ultra marathons in the future. I ran my first ultra marathon this summer, a 65 miler in about 11 hours. Bryan Yunis, Website Coordinator
I became involved in SCCS in 2006 after my good friend, and former Coordinating Committee member, Diane Tran convinced me that I was wasting my time doing any other advocacy because of the importance of child survival. After the rewarding experience of our National Lobby Day, in which SCCS members travel to Washington, D.C. to lobby their legislators, I discovered that SCCS is how I want to spend my time. We aim to eliminate the disenfranchisement and marginalization of children worldwide, and as the saying goes, "Children are one-third of our population and one hundred percent of our future." |
